I’ve been testing this one for a little while now and last night it really came in handy!

If you’ve seen any news reports regarding Southeast Texas in the past few days, you’ll know we’ve been slammed with some pretty intense storms. Rain, high winds, flooding, tornadoes, lightning… the power at our house has gone out 5 or more times in the weekend alone… I quit counting after the fifth time.

1 2 3

Luckily, we had an emergency radio that 1.) was solar powered, it was so easy to charge it while not in use… just set it in a window that got a lot of sun. 2.) Had NOAA weather band channels and kept us up to date on the exact weather conditions heading our way, even when our power was out. 3.) Has a full LED flashlight function and a lantern function – handy when the lights go out at night. 4.) Was able to charge our cell phones or any other device that needed a boost. I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but you can check it out here

This is definitely something that all households need! It would also be a great addition to any storm shelter or bunker since it doesn’t need an outlet to run. It can also be charged via the hand crank and can charge other devices this way as well!

Go check it out!

From January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014 there have been 454 reported tornadoes in Texas alone.

Texas ranks #1 out of all other US States for tornado frequency.

Harris, Galveston and Jefferson are in the top 5 major counties to experience the most tornadoes in recorded Texas history and statistically have the most severe thunderstorms per year in the state.

Above-ground storm shelters with at least 6 inch solid concrete walls and ceiling have been tested and proven to be able to withstand F5 tornado wind speed and damage time and again. There IS funding out there to enable you to construct above ground tornado shelters on your property. They can be simple backyard sheds or elaborate, fully functional bunkers… either way, your family is protected.

If you’re like me you’d be just fine in a windowless environment for a good while, but I realize, not everyone is like me. So here are a few options, not only to sustain your life in a windowless environment such as a bunker, shelter or other safe structure, but also a way to beat the depression.

First off I’d like to talk about something that we all think of when we think of long term living “underground” – sustainable food supply. Heirloom seeds are readily available on the internet in any variety or quantity, and once grown there are many edible vegetables that are “immortal” – you can just keep growing them forever from the scraps!

I’m getting a bit ahead of myself though… okay, indoor gardening.  There are a lot of edibles that do great growing indoors.

There are also several ways to grow indoors… you have the traditional dirt and pot method, hydroponics (this seems to have the added benefits of faster growing and a space saver as well), or even upside down.

There are tons of lighting mediums you can find on the internet, specialized to help plants grow as if they were in sunlight.

Then there are excellent re-grower plants…

  • Lettuce
  • Celery
  • Lemongrass
  • Bean Sprouts
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Peppers
  • Fennel
  • Tomatoes
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Turnips

There are many websites that show step by step information on how to do these excellent immortal vegetables!

But what do you do about the depression? Well, just so happens….

You can purchase incredibly realistic looking windows and skylights to mimic any landscape you wish! Alternatively you could make them yourself for much cheaper, with a “window frame” light-box and semi transparent scenery on a plastic or glass plate. These would also be beneficial for anyone who has a small living space with windows that face bare brick walls or smoggy city-scapes… unless you like that type of thing.

Here’s something that a lot of people I’ve talked to say they’d love to have, but there are a few on the market that would lead you to believe that you’d need Bill Gates’ bank account to have one.

In this post I’m going to weigh the pros and cons and also go over some of the basic costs of having your very own storm shelter, or bunker built.

Pros:

* Having an underground or partially underground storm shelter or bunker actually adds to the value of your home/property. The versatility of storm shelters and bunkers built today, especially in states like Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas can add to the property value when selling your home.

* You don’t have to have the cash upfront! many loan companies will finance loans for storm shelters and bunkers. Adding something like this to your property is considered home improvement! Here are a few companies to check out!

* Securing a loan for home improvement will actually allow you to build a high tech concrete storm shelter! The saying “You get what you pay for” is no different when discussing storm shelters and bunkers. You can basically pour your own concrete form shelter in your back yard for under $4000.00, but if you want to ensure your shelter is up to standard, you’ll need to call in a professional. Pros charge a bit more, but lets look at the options you can add when having a pro do the work.

(All prices are approximate and completely optional features)

-Blast doors $4,300.00

-Integrated NBC ventilation systems $6,500.00

-Electrical wiring $ varies on how much you want done and how much you can do yourself.

-Plumbing $ varies on extent of plumbing and drainage / sewage options you prefer.

-Solar Generator back up system (in case of complete power outages) $2,500.00 +

-Additional connected storage (for anything from food and necessities to seed storage and aquaponics system via tunnels and corridors.)

-Artificial day/night simulation $ please see electrical wiring and back up generators

-Literally a home away from home!

Of course how plain or how fancy you intend to build all depends on your purpose and how much you want to spend. Most people find that something along these lines are perfect for basic SHTF survival; you can build it in any size and can take your time modelling it just the way you want! The images provided by the following company offers complete turn key building and operation start to finish.

Cons:

* You do have to own your land to begin construction. Unfortunately, if you rent, even if your proprietor agrees to the construction, the only person benefiting in the long run is your landlord.

* The land you build on can’t be in a floodplain (if you want an underground structure) – many people in the state I live in (Texas) are under the impression you generally can’t have basements or other underground structures. Not true, you just have to get the proper permits and be able to prove your structure wont flood in the event that Texas weather is normal for Texas weather.

* Interior decorating is all you. most people, this won’t bother. However, if your looking to get a full underground home, complete with furnishings and food stockpile… well, you won’t get it. Furnishing your storm shelter (whether that’s supplying shelving and cots or installing entertainment systems and compound to compound intercoms) the ball is in your court.

* You won’t benefit from a shelter if you don’t get the ball rolling NOW. Seriously, in tornado alley and Texas, it’s entirely too easy to be caught unawares when talking about the fury of mother nature. She’s slightly more on edge here than in the rest of the states. If you’re looking to build for other reasons (see: economic and governmental collapse, WWIII or the Apocalypse) you might have a slightly better chance on waiting… but if you watch the news, don’t delay too long!

Happy Monday, everyone!

Today I start reviewing products that might interest the survival community and our first review is on an app by bitvis UG called simply “Prepper”

– Like it’s name it’s a very simple app but extremely useful! It takes the number of people you’re trying to keep alive and helps you keep track of the food and water you need to sustain them for various periods of time. It’s incredibly helpful while building your food stores.

Everything on the app is customizable which is wonderful, when you chose a food category it let you know what benefit that food type is to your community, high in carbs, good source of vitamin D, etc.

It also has customizable weights and measures which will make it highly valuable all over the world, not just in the US. You can choose between kg and lbs, the duration of the time estimated to survive and the overall status of your preparedness.

I also love that it gives you tips and hints, like “look for durable food supplies” and necessary water totals for your party.

Now the app is originally in German but the app I downloaded is wonderful in English, very comprehensive. And using Google Translate you can read the developer page in and language you choose.

I’ve included a link to the developer page here and I hope you enjoy this app as much as I am!
