I’ve been testing this one for a little while now and last night it really came in handy!

If you’ve seen any news reports regarding Southeast Texas in the past few days, you’ll know we’ve been slammed with some pretty intense storms. Rain, high winds, flooding, tornadoes, lightning… the power at our house has gone out 5 or more times in the weekend alone… I quit counting after the fifth time.

1 2 3

Luckily, we had an emergency radio that 1.) was solar powered, it was so easy to charge it while not in use… just set it in a window that got a lot of sun. 2.) Had NOAA weather band channels and kept us up to date on the exact weather conditions heading our way, even when our power was out. 3.) Has a full LED flashlight function and a lantern function – handy when the lights go out at night. 4.) Was able to charge our cell phones or any other device that needed a boost. I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but you can check it out here

This is definitely something that all households need! It would also be a great addition to any storm shelter or bunker since it doesn’t need an outlet to run. It can also be charged via the hand crank and can charge other devices this way as well!

Go check it out!

Yep… don’t know why I took so long to do it… but here they are!

From January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2014 there have been 454 reported tornadoes in Texas alone.

Texas ranks #1 out of all other US States for tornado frequency.

Harris, Galveston and Jefferson are in the top 5 major counties to experience the most tornadoes in recorded Texas history and statistically have the most severe thunderstorms per year in the state.

Above-ground storm shelters with at least 6 inch solid concrete walls and ceiling have been tested and proven to be able to withstand F5 tornado wind speed and damage time and again. There IS funding out there to enable you to construct above ground tornado shelters on your property. They can be simple backyard sheds or elaborate, fully functional bunkers… either way, your family is protected.

Don’t wait. We can help you find financing to fit your needs and budget. Contact us today!

If you’re like me you’d be just fine in a windowless environment for a good while, but I realize, not everyone is like me. So here are a few options, not only to sustain your life in a windowless environment such as a bunker, shelter or other safe structure, but also a way to beat the depression.

First off I’d like to talk about something that we all think of when we think of long term living “underground” – sustainable food supply. Heirloom seeds are readily available on the internet in any variety or quantity, and once grown there are many edible vegetables that are “immortal” – you can just keep growing them forever from the scraps!

I’m getting a bit ahead of myself though… okay, indoor gardening.  There are a lot of edibles that do great growing indoors.

There are also several ways to grow indoors… you have the traditional dirt and pot method, hydroponics (this seems to have the added benefits of faster growing and a space saver as well), or even upside down.

There are tons of lighting mediums you can find on the internet, specialized to help plants grow as if they were in sunlight.

Then there are excellent re-grower plants…

  • Lettuce
  • Celery
  • Lemongrass
  • Bean Sprouts
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Mushrooms
  • Peppers
  • Fennel
  • Tomatoes
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Turnips

There are many websites that show step by step information on how to do these excellent immortal vegetables!

But what do you do about the depression? Well, just so happens….

You can purchase incredibly realistic looking windows and skylights to mimic any landscape you wish! Alternatively you could make them yourself for much cheaper, with a “window frame” light-box and semi transparent scenery on a plastic or glass plate. These would also be beneficial for anyone who has a small living space with windows that face bare brick walls or smoggy city-scapes… unless you like that type of thing.

Bunkers Galore is now offering premade bug-out bags for the exceptionally busy prepper.

I’ve always been interested in survival and have loved planning and prepping way before I knew other people liked the same kind of thing. Over the years I’ve studied herbs and their properties and been interested in how medicines and treatments are made.

Today I’ve finally accomplished something I’ve been wanting to do for years! I’ve published my first survival book!

{Quick synopsis} Herbal guide, easy to read instructions on brewing up your own syrups, tonics and salves, list of common ailments and what herbs may best treat the complains.

So I’ve been doing some research, because in my particular neighborhood, we tend to have a bit of standing water each time it rains. Nothing huge, but I’d definitely need a lot of drainage work on my homestead before constructing an underground shelter.

I’ve always been wary that above ground shelters would be less safe than their underground alternatives, but thankfully, this is not so…

Myth: Above ground shelters will get sucked up into the tornado like any other above ground structure…

FALSE: Actually, it’s not suction that causes the vast majority of tornado damage.  Rather, it is the extreme wind speeds of surface air being drawn to the vortex that provide the energy responsible for most tornado damage to buildings, vehicles and other non-secured structures. If tornado force winds can get under an object, chances are it could go airborne.

Some may say “I’ve seen roads ripped up”! Yes, but those are blacktop roads where the extreme winds have eroded soil away from the edge. Blacktop is typically thinner and has far less strength than concrete; plus it has no steel reinforcement. Anyway…back on subject…

The real threat then becomes the impact of airborne debris, which poses the greatest threat for injury or death if you’re not adequately shielded from it.

Testing has proved that 6″ thick solid concrete performs best in sustaining and reflecting impact from tornado AND hurricane force winds…

Living in South East Texas, we get as many hurricanes as we do tornadoes… which is to say, too many. With one of these above ground concrete safe rooms, you’ll be able to ride out any storm in comfort! Prices are based on size and optional extras, so that definitely helps! For tornadoes and hurricanes you’d only need a 10 x 20 to ride out a storm lasting a day or two… that a relatively comfortable size, but thankfully they build all sizes! Specified to your design, and you can get a free quote with no obligation to purchase anything.

This is news to me… I knew you could get personal or home improvement loans to build your storm shelter, safe room or bunker, but I DID NOT know that you could get government assistance!

Check out this page from the Texas Department of Public Safety – or here at the FEMA website.

I realize this may not cover all of the expenses required to build the safe room you want, but getting a discount is getting a discount! There are even non-disaster grants!

Why does the government care? You’re saving them money, essentially. Here are the latest Flood Map areas (searchable by address) to see whether you’d benefit more from an under ground or above ground structure.

My question would have to be, why aren’t more local governments implementing THIS!? There are many people who don’t own their homes or simply live in an area that will not allow or support each individual to build his or her own private shelter… why don’t more communities have public safe rooms or shelters?

The way I look at it is, if your shelter is a decent size and outfitted well enough, it can serve as a temporary home while any damaged house is being repaired, remodeled or rebuilt.

Take a look at some of the damage that can come from a tornado. We are approaching the active season… here in tornado alley, it pays to be prepared.

Why am I a prepper? Because I’m a mother & my motto has always been “ya never know.” Simple as that. Water, shelter & food are the first and foremost necessities in any survival scenario – from a two week power outage to a full blown SHTF disaster. With so many mouths to feed, I’ve been a food prepper long before we ditched the suburbs & started our small family homestead.

Even with dairy goats, chickens, meat rabbits for protein, gardens and few fruit trees that allow us to can our food – there is always an expiration date. There could be severe drought, early freeze, or too much rain & your crop can be ruined. Livestock can get ill & die just like that. Store bought canned foods offer less nutrition & more junk preservatives than fresh produce, & all have an even shorter expiration dates than freeze dried. I’ve always kept some freeze dried fruits, berries & veggies on hand because they carry up to a 25 yr shelf life & are healthier than frozen or canned alternatives.

Unmilled grains, sugar, salt, beans can all be pretty safely stored in 5 gallon buckets with the right mylar bags, oxygen absorbers – sealed properly – ALL DAY LONG… Stock up on honey & long lasting condiments. Fruits, veggies, dairy & meat are another story entirely. No prepper-minded individual wants to have a nice stockpile of canned goods that end up going to mush, or worse, going bad completely and result in a nasty case of botulism in a long term survival situation.

Enter Thrive Life (formerly Shelf Reliance) non-GMO, freeze dried foods. We joined Thrive Life (more of a food buyer’s club if ordering monthly, but bulk purchases can also be made) in order to slowly build up our long term food preps for our own family. As consultants, we can offer the same peace of mind to others in knowing that you have enough long term food storage for your own needs.

The freeze drying process makes it possible for food to be harvested at it’s peak ripeness, immediately dehydrated of all water, and flash frozen. This makes Thrive foods not only extremely long lasting, but also more flavorful and nutrient rich than anything you can buy at the supermarket – fresh, canned, or frozen! (Just think about how long a bunch of bananas takes to make it, picked green, imported into the US, then shipped to your local store & then sitting on your counter!)

Not only that, but just HOW much money do you end up wasting every month in fresh foods that have gone bad sitting in your fridge because you ran out of time to make all those meals you had planned on cooking? We’re all guilty of it, myself definitely included! Thrive not only provides long term food storage, but also ready-to-prepare food that has a minimum one year shelf AFTER being opened. All you do is add water to rehydrate for a few minutes and BOOM – one cup of freeze dried food equals one cup of fresh food. Add berries & fruit to smoothies or cereal, or snack on them without adding water!
